The Screaming Eagle Division
In 1965, the 1st Brigade was sent to Vietnam along with support troops. The remainder of the division followed until the end of 1967. In seven years of Vietnam operation, the 101st Airborne participated in more than 15 operations. For the troop transport only helicopters were used, which represented a much better alternative to aircraft in the sometimes almost impenetrable jungle and in the absence of runways.
In 1972, the 101st Airborne Division left Vietnam as the last combat troop. Their losses there more than doubled those of the Second World War.
